Softball Falls To Temple In Final Game Of Speedline Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ole Miss never could get the bats going Sunday as Temple took advantage of a fielding error and a passed ball to hand the Rebels a 2-0 loss in the final game of the Speedline Invitational for Ole Miss.
The Rebels and Owls faced off in the first game of tournament play in the third place pool championship bracket.
Temple struck the only blows of the game, scoring two runs off errors in the top of the third. Lauren Evans flied out to right field to open the inning, before Aida Esquer singled to left center in the next at bat. Esquer then advanced to second on a sac bunt from Jessica Rohn.
Katie Weigle then singled through the right side, but Stacy McCommon missed the ball in right field allowing Weigle to advance to third and Esquer to score. Weigle would score the second run of the inning on a passed ball to Lynsey Grace in the next at bat. Grace singled, but the Rebels got out of the inning when Laura Gutscher flied out to center field.
Mary Jane Callahan came in to relive Brill between the fourth and fifth innings.
Brill (1-5) suffered the loss for the Rebels as she worked four innings, striking out five batters and walking none. She gave up five hits in her 4.0 innings of work.
Callahan worked 3.0 innings for the Rebels, striking out two, walking none and giving up one hit.
The Rebels will return to action on Saturday against the Kentucky Wildcats at home in the Southeastern Conference opener. The Rebels and Wildcats will play a double header on Saturday, with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
