STARKVILLE, Miss. - Sophomore right-hander Mark Holliman pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings and sophomore 1B Stephen Head went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead No. 4 (Collegiate Baseball) Ole Miss to a 7-1 win over arch-rival Mississippi State Friday night at Dudy Noble Field, Polk DeMent Stadium, in the opening game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
With the win, Ole Miss improves to 23-3 on the season, including 6-1 in the SEC, while Mississippi State drops to 16-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference. The Rebels also snapped a six-game SEC losing streak to the Bulldogs.
Holliman (5-0) limited the Bulldogs to five hits and three walks, while striking out eight in earning the win.
Sophomore right-hander Jamie Gant (3-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits and four walks and striking out three in six innings.
Head hit his 10th home run of the season with a two-run shot in the seventh to extend the Rebels' lead to 6-0.
Barry Gunther, Brian Pettway and Matt Tolbert also collected two hits each on the night as Ole Miss out-hit Mississippi State 12-8.
Second baseman Jeffrey Rea went 2-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
The Bulldogs averted the shutout in the ninth inning when Casey Hamilton hit a pinch-hit double to score Brad Jones, who singled to start the ninth.
Ole Miss will look to clinch its third consecutive SEC series win this season, when the two teams meet Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., at Dudy Noble Field, Polk DeMent Stadium. Sophomore left-hander Brae Wright (5-0, 1.43 ERA) is scheduled to draw the start for the Rebels, opposite Mississippi State junior right-hander Alan Johnson (0-1, 5.48 ERA).
