ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and complete a three-game sweep of No. 6 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss with a 7-3 victory in front of 3,007 at Foley Field Sunday afternoon.
The loss extended the Rebels' season-long losing streak to five games and dropped them to 31-11 overall and 11-7 in the Southeastern Conference. Georgia improved to 26-15 and evened its SEC mark at 9-9.
The Bulldogs took advantage of an Ole Miss error to score three runs on one hit in the fifth inning. Jonathan Wyatt walked and Josh Smith singled to start the inning and put runners on first and second. Justin Holmes then laid down a bunt and reached safely when pitcher Brae Wright's throw sailed into right field. Wyatt scored from second on the play to give Georgia a 3-2 lead while Holmes went to second and Smith reached third.
Smith then scored on Marshall Szabo's grounder to short, and after Josh Morris was intentionally walked, Derek Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Holmes and extend the Georgia lead to 5-2.
Holmes added a two-run single in the sixth to push the Bulldogs' advantage to 7-2.
Senior left-hander Paul Lubrano (4-3) went 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks.
Wright (6-2) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four in 5 1/3 innings.
Junior right fielder Seth Smith went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Rebels at the plate. He gave Ole Miss a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double and added another RBI double in the eighth to make it 7-3.
Holmes finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Clint Sammons also had two hits as Georgia out-hit Ole Miss 9-7 on the afternoon.
Ole Miss will return to action Tuesday evening when the Rebels face in-state rival Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m., at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Miss. Ole Miss will host Murray State Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field before traveling to Columbia, S.C., to open a three-game SEC series at South Carolina next Friday.
