OXFORD, Miss. - A 73-yard touchdown run by quarterback Micheal Spurlock highlighted a 70-minute scrimmage here Saturday afternoon as Coach David Cutcliffe's Ole Miss Rebels continued spring football workouts inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
"On a day like today, we are going to have to look at tape and evaluate some things," Cutcliffe said. "(Michael) Spurlock made some big plays for us. Vashon Pearson ran the ball well today. I have been really pleased with what he has done this spring."
Spurlock completed 12-of-27 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 107 yards on seven carries, including the 73-yard TD run. Ethan Flatt finished 10-of-19 for 140 yards and a touchdown, and Robert Lane went 8-of-19 for 67 yards and no touchdowns.
Pearson carried the ball 10 times for 92 yards and scored on a 15-yard TD run. He also ran for big gains of 17, 23 and 14 yards. Jonathan Nichols, the 2003 Lou Groza Award winner, was 2-of-2 on field goals with a 56-yarder and a 41-yarder.
Taye Biddle caught three passes for 104 yards including a touchdown, Kerry Johnson had two receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown and Mario Hill grabbed six receptions for 88 yards.
The highlight on defense came when Rob Robertson picked off Spurlock and returned it 23 yards.
Near the end of the scrimmage, the Rebels did some work on the two-minute drill.
"The two-minute drill work we did at the end, was good for us, both ways," Cutcliffe said. "That is the best situation you can put an inexperienced quarterback in. They are really improving. The other day it was somewhat disastrous, so today it was good to get that work in and see some consistency."
The next practice for the Rebels will be next Tuesday. Ole Miss will conclude spring drills Saturday, April 17 with the playing of the annual Red-Blue Game.
