OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore first baseman/left-handed pitcher Stephen Head was named the recipient of the 2004 Dave "Boo" Ferriss Award, for the top college player in the state of Mississippi Monday afternoon at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. The award was voted on by professional scouts in the state.

Other finalists for the award were Mississippi State sophomore outfielder Brad Corley and Southern Miss junior second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir.

Head, who is also on the 2004 Golden Spikes Award Watch List for the nation's top amateur player, has been a two-way threat for the Rebels. He leads Ole Miss with a .360 batting average and has hit 11 home runs and driven in a team-best 47 runs.

On the mound, Head has made 15 appearances, including seven starts. He is 6-1 with five saves and has a 2.43 ERA in 59.1 innings. Head has also struck out 48 while walking only 13 and recorded two complete games this season against Mississippi State and South Carolina.

"This is a tremendous honor for Stephen," said Ole Miss Head Coach Mike Bianco. "It's a very well deserved honor as he has certainly been a major factor in our success this season. He has consistently shown that he is one of the top players not only in the Southeastern Conference, but in the country."

Ole Miss is 38-15 on the season and is tied for the SEC Western Division and overall conference lead with a 17-10 SEC mark. The Rebels will conclude the regular season with a three-game series against LSU, beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
