OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss held its first "daily double" practice of 2004 Saturday, as the Rebels worked out for just over two hours in the morning before returning to the field later in the evening. Ole Miss practiced in full pads on the University's practice fields in the morning, while the Rebels were in helmets, shorts and shoulder pads during the evening practice conducted inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The morning session marked the Rebels' second day in full pads. During the morning workout, in addition to working on individual fundamentals, the Rebels continued to work on their offensive and defensive schemes.
"I thought we had good work, I just didn't think our contact was quite as crisp today," said sixth-year head coach David Cutcliffe. "I don't quite know why that is, but it may have to do with the fact that this is the sixth day in a row we've been out here."
Ole Miss spent most of the evening practice working on the passing game and special teams play.
Cutcliffe said that most of the schemes being worked on were part of the basic offensive and defensive packages, however, the Rebels did do some work in preparation for the September 4 season opener against Memphis.
"We did do some insertion in practice today," Cutcliffe said. "When you do that, it makes you think a little more and that probably took away from some of our aggressiveness.
"August is an important month for us, and it's critical that we continue to get good work in and get crisper in our execution."
Ole Miss will continue preseason workouts with a single practice Sunday afternoon.
