OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team suffered its first non-conference home loss in seven years Tuesday, as the Rebels accidentally scored a goal in their own net in a 1-0 defeat to Memphis. It marked the first loss of the 2004 season for Ole Miss (2-1). The defensive battle between the regional rivals saw the Rebels finish with an 18-7 shot advantage but unable to connect, as Tiger goalkeeper Natalie Haerens turned away eight shots in the victory for Memphis (2-0). The deciding score came in the 84th minute, when Rebel defender Cori Mehan misplayed a cross and sent it into her own goal. It was the lone mishap by an Ole Miss defense that was near perfect all night, allowing only one shot-on-goal. "We just have to reassure Cori," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "The ball came flying across the box and hit her foot. It could have happened to anybody. Cori has played awesome for us this year." The Ole Miss loss marked the club's first at home to a non-SEC team since a 4-2 defeat to Kansas in 1997. "Obviously this was a very disappointing loss," Holeman said. "I think Memphis had a good game plan coming in, and they executed it well. They played low pressure and sat back. It made it very hard for us to get it near the net. "This game is a disappointment, but we must find a way to regroup. Hopefully we learned a lesson that you have to show up every night and play as hard as you can." The Rebels hit the road for the first time in the young campaign this weekend, as they travel to the Charlotte Classic for matches with host Charlotte Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET and Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m. Ole Miss is next in Oxford Sept. 10 for a Friday night battle with Arkansas Little-Rock.
