CHARLOTTE - Kelly Renie netted the game-winner and the Ole Miss defense handled the rest, as the Rebel soccer team shut out Charlotte 1-0 Friday in day one of the Charlotte Classic. The Rebels rebound from their first loss of the year to improve to 3-1 and next take on Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in Charlotte. Friday's lone score came in the 32nd minute, as Karen Hall set up Renie 16 yards away and the forward from Carmel, Ind., native buried it in the back of the net for her third goal of the young season. It marked Renie's 11th career game-winning score. Despite only one goal to show for it, the Ole Miss attack was fierce all night and finished with a 13-6 edge in shots. The Rebels banged three attempts off the crossbar and had six more turned away by 49er keeper Shannon Huffman. The Ole Miss defense limited Charlotte (0-3) to only two shots-on-goal, and Ann Shelton saved both of those in notching her first career shutout in goal. "This is the best we've played yet this year," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "We played with a lot of energy and intensity, and our defensive pressure was outstanding. Coming off the loss, this game was critical, and the team responded with a great deal of heart in an extremely competitive match. We're very happy with the win." Friday also marked the return of senior defense Ramey Rush, who saw limited minutes in both halves. The Meridian, Miss., native tore her right ACL just prior to preseason and had sat out the season's first three matches. Prior to that, Rush had started every match of her career.
