OXFORD, Miss. - After a day of meetings, orientation sessions and media day activities, the Ole Miss football team took to the field for its first preseason practice Monday evening. The sixth-year head coach David Cutcliffe saw some positives in the opening workout. "We got off to a good start," Cutcliffe said. "I thought our attitude reflected that. There was a lot of energy out here. But there are a lot of things we're going to need to do better. There was some rust." In shorts, helmets and no pads, the Rebels went through a 2 ? hour practice Monday, focusing on individual fundamentals. The squad also got in some special teams work. "I thought that the people that knew what to do, showed they knew what they were doing," Cutcliffe said. "We can throw and catch the ball a little bit better, but there's not a whole lot more you can say (about a practice without pads)." The Rebels will continue preseason drills Tuesday, as they lead up to the 2004 season opener against Memphis on Sept. 4. Kickoff with the Tigers is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
