OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head football coach David Cutcliffe announced here Monday that sophomore Ethan Flatt will "probably" be the starting quarterback Saturday when the Rebels host the Vanderbilt Commodores in a Southeastern Conference battle.
"We will probably start Ethan at quarterback, but as always will continue to evaluate practice as the week goes on," Cutcliffe said following Monday's workout. Should Flatt get the final nod for the starting signal-caller role, he would replace junior Micheal Spurlock, who started at the quarterback spot against Memphis and Alabama.
"Both Ethan and Micheal are going to play Saturday," Cutcliffe added.
Flatt, a 6-6, 218-pounder from Nashville, Tenn., came off the bench during last Saturday night's 28-7 loss at Alabama, and completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Eric Rice with 13:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. For the night, Flatt completed five of 12 passes for 63 yards and the one score.
Spurlock, who was five of 15 for 54 yards against Alabama, has completed 16 of 46 passes for 236 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns over the first two games.
Ole Miss and Vanderbilt are set for an 11:30 kickoff Saturday morning at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field. The contest is being televised by Jefferson-Pilot Sports as part of the SEC-TV package.
