Soccer Team Suffers Road Loss at No. 6 Kansas

9/17/2004 | Soccer

Sept. 17, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Facing its first top-10 opponent of the season on the road was too much for the Ole Miss soccer team to handle, as the Rebels fell to 6th-ranked Kansas Friday 2-0 at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Ole Miss (4-3) continues its Midwest road trip Sunday at Saint Louis. The match, which serves as the finale of the Billikens' Toys for Tots Tournament, is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.

Friday's faceoff between the Rebels and Jayhawks was a physical match with limited offensive opportunities, as the Central Region rivals combined for only eight shots-on-goal and three corner kicks.

In the 20th minute, Kansas (7-1) broke the stalemate as Rachel Gilfillan connected with the back of the net, off a Caroline Smith assist. Despite a stronger Ole Miss attack in the second stanza, the KU defense made the one-goal lead stand, and with seven minutes remaining in the match, Smith would seal the victory with her third goal of the year. Am Geha picked up the assist.

"We played well, especially in the second half, but Kansas was the better team today," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "They are the hardest-working team we've played this year. They put pressure on us all over the field.

"This loss will make us better. We know we'll be facing this kind of competition in SEC play, and we'll be better prepared."

The defeat was not without casualty for Ole Miss, as sophomore defender Lyndsey Williams suffered a concussion late in the second half. The Germantown, Tenn., native is expected to miss Sunday's Saint Louis bout.

The loss snapped an Ole Miss streak of nine straight wins over Big 12 opposition, dating back to 1999. It also evened the all-time series with the Jayhawks at 3-3. The rivalry is second only to Memphis for the Rebels in most non-conference meetings with one club.
