ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis netted goals on three of its first four shots, including a pair of scores in the opening five minutes, en route to a 3-0 upset of Ole Miss Sunday at the Toys for Tots Women's Soccer Classic.
Despite nearly tripling the Billikens in shots, the Rebels drop consecutive regular-season matches for the first time since 2001, and fall to 4-4 on the year.
The Central Region foes jumped out of the gates on the offensive, as the first six minutes saw Ole Miss reel off four shots and Saint Louis fire two. However, the Rebels came up empty on all four counts, while the Billikens connected on both.
Just 1:22 into play, SLU's Cassi Winchell set up Kelly Ferguson, who launched a 20-yard score from the left wing. Just over three minutes later, Maureen Hughes put Saint Louis (4-2-1) ahead by two, as she struck a ball that deflected off Rebel Kristal Menard's foot and blooped over goalkeeper Ann Shelton.
After five more Ole Miss attempts failed to reach the net, the team found itself in a deep hole in the 22nd minute, as a foul in the box provided Perry with a penalty kick opportunity that she capitalized on, sending the ball to the right side.
Down 3-0, the Rebels continued their relentless attack but with no success. Ole Miss outshot Saint Louis 8-4 in the first half and 8-2 in the second. Billiken keeper Amanda Martin turned away seven shots on the afternoon, including four from the foot of Kelly Renie.
"Saint Louis was opportunistic and got on us early. It was tough to recover," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "We had our chances, but we've had trouble scoring lately. I think the team knows we're better than we've been playing, and we'll turn things around for SEC play. We'll be ready for this upcoming weekend."
For their efforts Sunday, Menard and Cori Mehan were named to the Toys for Tots All-Tournament Team. Mehan, a freshman from Cordova, Tenn., led an Ole Miss defense that was missing sophomore Lyndsey Williams and senior Ramey Rush with injury. Williams suffered a concussion in Friday's loss at No. 6 Kansas.
The Rebels return home and look to regroup, as they open SEC play next weekend. The four-game conference homestand begins with Georgia Friday at 7 p.m. CT, followed by 7th-ranked Tennessee Sunday at 1 p.m.
