OXFORD, Miss. - Ernest Ross will officially begin his second stint as Ole Miss men's golf coach Monday when the Rebels open their 2004-05 season at the Raising Cane Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Ross returns to his alma mater after leading the program from 1979-87. He guided the Rebels to a Southeastern Conference Championship in 1984 and fourth-place showing at the 1985 NCAA Championships. The 1974 Ole Miss graduate also garnered SEC Coach of the Year accolades in 1982 and 1984.

"We had a lot of success during my first eight years at Ole Miss and I'm looking forward to helping this program get back to that level," Ross said. "All of us are excited about the upcoming season. The young men in this program have been working extremely hard and I think they are ready to compete."

Ole Miss will be joined by Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, James Madison, UL-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee, New Orleans, Sam Houston, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss and Tulane at the season opener. The 16-team field is slated to play 36 holes at the Camebrake Golf Course on Monday and 18 more on Tuesday.

"We need some early-season success, some good finishes and some wins," Ross added. "Last year took a toll on a lot of these guys and we need them to have a better self-image of their golf game. This sport is very mental and we want to set these guys up in a situation where they can re-gain some confidence."

Sophomore Kyle Ellis leads a group of six returnees after posting a 74.47 stroke average in 2003-04. Senior Jordan Dempsey, who redshirted last year, is back after registering a 73.69 18-hole average in 2002-03. Sophomore Callum Macaulay, sophomore Chris Rogers and freshman David Marino will also compete for Ole Miss in the season opener.
