No. 16 Tennessee Holds Off Ole Miss on Soccer Field

OXFORD, Miss. - No. 16 Tennessee scored 10 seconds in and survived a 90-minute soccer battle with Ole Miss Sunday 2-1.

With Friday's 3-1 victory over Georgia, the Rebels take a split of the opening weekend of SEC play and move to 5-5, 1-1 in league play. The Lady Volunteers improve to 5-2-2, 2-0 in the SEC.

Before Ole Miss could even break a sweat, the home team found itself down a goal. Off the opening kickoff, Lady Vol Lyndsey Patterson sent the ball ahead, where Kayla Lockaby ripped it to the near upper post, just off the outstretched fingers of Rebel keeper Ann Shelton.

Play went back-and-forth from that point on, and Ole Miss found the equalizer at the 28:30 mark. On the team's first corner kick, Hillary Beckman crossed the ball in, and defender Lyndsey Williams connected on a header for her second career goal and a 1-1 deadlock at the half.

"Tennessee is too good of a team to spot them a goal before you even start playing soccer," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "That was just a mistake on our part. It was a great kickoff play by them, and we had a couple of players out of position.

"We battled extremely well, and to come back against a top-20 team and tie them up before the half says a lot."

The Orange took control directly out of the second-half gates, and picked up another quick goal. Less than two minutes after halftime, UT crowded the Ole Miss box, and Emily Redberg fired an attempt that Williams could not clear. The ball deflected off the Rebel sophomore's foot to the top of the net. Patterson picked up her second assist on what would be the game-winner.

The teams traded possession again throughout the second stanza, with Ole Miss failing to capitalize on some dangerous opportunities. The Rebels had a flurry of corner kicks over the final 15 minutes, and a pair of Kelly Renie shots sailed wide.

Tennessee registered a narrow 14-11 edge in shots, while Ole Miss had more corners 4-3. Shelton notched six saves in goal for the Rebels.

"There's no question we battled them today and played extremely well," Holeman said. "Obviously you want to see a different result, but there is no shame in losing by a goal to the top team in the SEC. We played hard, competed the entire 90 minutes, and I'm proud of them."

Ole Miss continues its four-game SEC homestand next weekend with LSU Friday at 7 p.m. CT and Arkansas Sunday at 1 p.m.
