Rebels Drop Double-OT Soccer Thriller to Wake Forest

9/5/2004 | Soccer

Sept. 5, 2004

CHARLOTTE - Ole Miss and Wake Forest battled for 116 minutes, before Demon Deacon Sarah Kozey netted the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime soccer match Sunday at the Charlotte Classic. The Rebels and Deacs, both NCAA Tournament teams, fought through a scoreless first half that saw limited offensive opportunities. Wake (3-0-1) mustered up five shots in the first 45 minutes of play, while Ole Miss (3-2-0) had only one scoring attempt. The teams turned up the offense after the break with the Deacons drawing first blood. At the 72:25 mark, Elizabeth Remy sent a cross into the box, and Jayme Liegh Cargoni polished it off for a 1-0 Wake lead. Less than six minutes later, the Rebels knotted the game at a goal apiece, as Kristal Menard clawed out of a crowd in front and booted in a two-yard score. It marked the first goal of the young season for the two-time All-SEC first teamer. Ole Miss outshot Wake Forest 12-7 in the second stanza and had two attempts deflect off the crossbar, but the Rebels were unable to post another score in regulation. "I thought Wake Forest outplayed us in the first half, but we came out with more intensity and energy in the second half, and had some good scoring opportunities," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. Both clubs had their chances in the overtime periods, and with four minutes remaining in the second extra frame, Wake Forest put the match away. Tara Caldwell sent a ball ahead, and Kozey drove in one-on-one with keeper and nailed her fifth goal of the year. "It was a great match against a very good Wake Forest team," Holeman said. "I'm proud of how we played. We had a difficult time finishing our scoring opportunities, and luck certainly did not go our way. But we played hard and with a lot of heart, and our heads are not down." The Demon Deacons concluded the afternoon with an 18-13 edge in shots, while the Rebels had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Ann Shelton notched six saves in goal for Ole Miss, who went 1-1 at the weekend tournament. The Rebels knocked off host Charlotte 1-0 Friday. Menard and sophomore defender Lyndsey Williams were both named to the Charlotte Classic All-Tournament team. Ole Miss returns home Friday to take on Arkansas-Little Rock. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CT at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
