OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team bounced back from a season-opening loss to South Florida, to pick up their first victory of the 2005 season with a 6-1 win over Jacksonville State University Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center. It took just a little more than two hours for the Lady Rebels to acquire the necessary four points for the win to improve their record to 1-1.
"We needed to get a win no matter who it was against," head coach Mark Beyers said. "The girls played really aggressive from the outset and never let up. It was a great opportunity for some of our girls to get some matches in. Chloe (Carlotti) played extremely well the entire weekend as did Vicki (Tomatis). They provided great leadership to begin the season."
Ole Miss swept the doubles in dominating fashion to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Rebels lost only two games in all three doubles matches. Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis improved to 8-3 overall with their 8-1 win at the top spot.
In singles, Carlotti, a two-time All-American, needed just 30 minutes to take out JSU's Zeynep Gurkaynak, 6-0, 6-0 on court one, making it 2-0 Ole Miss. Ilona Somers also held her opponent, Michelle Dushner, scoreless to give the Lady Rebels a 3-0 lead.
Tomatis finished off an undefeated weekend in singles and doubles with her straight set (6-0, 6-2) win over Gamecock Robin Gorman at No. 3 singles, to clinch the Lady Rebel victory.
Freshman Sarah Sabin (Stuart, Fla.) rebounded from a disappointing loss on Saturday, to post a 6-2, 6-3 win over JSU's Erin Higgs at No. 4 singles. Carlin Cochran went 3-0 on the weekend in singles and doubles capped off by her first dual match singles win as a Lady Rebel on Sunday. Cochran, a native of Dublin, Ga., defeated Gamecock Layla Abby, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
The Gamecock's only win came at No. 6 singles, where Memphis native Babette Lombardo beat Lady Rebel sophomore Claire Conerly, 6-4, 6-2.
Ole Miss will continue its four-match homestand this weekend with a pair of matches against Big 12 opponents Kansas and Kansas State. The Lady Rebels will host Kansas Friday at 2 p.m. and Kansas State Sunday at Noon.
