Lady Rebel Netters To Compete In ITA South Regional Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team will begin competing in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The University of Georgia is serving as host for the four-day event, which concludes Sunday with the singles and doubles championships.

The tournament will showcase players from 21 different schools around the South including the nation's top-ranked singles and doubles players. There will be two flights, an "A" and a "B," which will have a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket with consolation.

Four of the nation's top 10 ranked singles players hail from the ITA South Region, including No. 1 Jennifer Magley (Florida), No. 4 Robin Stephenson (Alabama), No. 6 Shadisha Robinson (Georgia) and No. 8 Kristi Miller (Ga. Tech). In doubles, there are four top ten tandems in No. 1 Robinson/Caroline Basu (Georgia), No. 5 Miller/Alison Silverio (Ga. Tech), No. 7 Gabrielle Duch/Neyssa Etienne (South Florida) and No. 8 Magley/Diana Srebovic (Florida).

The Lady Rebels will have seven players competing in the ITA South Regional led by Ilona Somers, ranked No. 100 in the nation. Somers won the Ole Miss Fall Classic to begin the season.

Joining Somers in the field will be senior Virginia Tomatis, junior Claire Conerly, sophomores, Preethi Subramanian and Carlin Cochran and freshmen, Tsenia Tokarieva and Merry Ellen Henry.

Ole Miss will have three doubles teams in the draw with Somers and Tomatis, ranked No. 29, leading the way. Cochran and Tokarieva, who reached the finals of the Blue Draw at the Ole Miss Fall Classic, will team up again. Henry and Subramanian will join forces for the first time this fall.

The "A" flight singles and doubles winners along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA/ National Indoor Championships next month on the campus of Ohio State in Columbus.
