Box Score

STARKVILLE, Miss. - It wasn't the Rebels' night on Wednesday, as nothing seemed to go the way of the road team. Ole Miss (7-14, 1-8 SEC) fell for the third-straight match, dropping a tightly contested match to Mississippi State (11-7, 2-6 SEC) by a score of 3-0 (23-30, 25-30, 24-30).

Jaclyn Toohey led the Rebels with seven kills on the night, the first time Toohey has not reached at least 10 kills against an SEC foe this season. She was joined by Kristen Carroll who picked up six kills against the Bulldogs on the night.

Mississippi State was led by Rachel Cooper's 11 kills and Erin Seago's 10 kills on the night. Megan Lukasek pulled up 14 digs to lead the Bulldog defense.

Despite the loss, the Rebels out-blocked the Bulldogs 7-to-4 for the match.

A service error from the Bulldogs gave the Rebels the first point of the game, but the Rebels returned the favor with a service error to give Mississippi State an answer. A service ace from the Bulldogs on the next play kept the point trading going, and the two teams were off. The Bulldogs pushed ahead by two with a pair of quick scores, and the lead held as the Rebels fought to get control of the match.

Ole Miss fell behind by five at 18-13 on an attack error, pushing head coach Joe Getzin to call timeout and huddle up the squad to regain focus.

The Rebels scored immediately out of the break, but the Bulldogs pressed back and extended the lead to five. Ole Miss cut it to three, but two quick scores in answer from Mississippi State forced Ole Miss to call another timeout at 23-18.

Mississippi State never relinquished the lead, extending it to seven before finally claiming the game 30-23 on a kill down the line from the Bulldogs.

Game two opened with Mississippi State claiming the first point on a cross court kill to the deep right corner. The Rebels wasted no time, answering with a deep kill down the right line from Carroll to even things at one. Mississippi State then moved ahead with a big run, forcing the Rebels into a timeout down 11-4.

Ole Miss managed a run of its own out of the break to cut the lead to four at 12-8, but Mississippi State got things going again to hold onto the lead. It was then that the Rebels again mounted a rally sparked by a service ace from Ashleigh Shear. Ole Miss cut the lead to two at 14-12 to climb back into the match after being down big early.

Nicole Mahan put down a kill and a big block to keep Ole Miss within striking distance after the Bulldogs attempted to mount another rally, keeping things tight at 18-16. Mississippi State would use it's serve to put together a run from there, pushing back out by four at 20-16.

Again, the Bulldogs found the answer as Mississippi State pushed ahead 22-18 and force the Rebels into a timeout. Mahan again laid down a big kill out of the break, and Tricia Agee formed a wall at the net on the next play to pull Ole Miss back within two at 22-20.

The Bulldogs would not go away, holding onto the lead and answering every Rebel run as Mississippi State took the second game 30-25.

A service ace from the Bulldogs opened the third game before a block from Toohey and Lauren Moffett on the next play got the Rebels on the board. Ole Miss moved ahead 3-2, but the lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs mounted a rally to go ahead 9-4.

The Rebels would not go away, clawing back into the match on a kill and a service ace from Carroll, sandwiched around an attack error by the Bulldogs. A big block from Agee cut the lead to two, before another miscue from Mississippi State pushed the Bulldogs to a timeout at 10-9.

Once again, the Bulldogs found a way to move ahead as two quick scores and a point after a red card on Getzin moved the home team out to a 13-9 lead. The lead grew from there for the Bulldogs, with Ole Miss calling a timeout at 16-10 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Ole Miss again clawed its way back, closing the gap to three at 17-14 before the Bulldogs would again move ahead on ball handling errors and passing miscues by the Rebels. Ole Miss would call timeout down 22-16 in an effort to stem the tide.

A service ace out of the break for the Bulldogs kept the Mississippi State run in place before a kill from Nikki Hill put another point in the Ole Miss column. It wasn't enough as the Bulldogs outside hitters continued to pound away at the Ole Miss defense, claiming the match with a 30-24 win in game three.

Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on the Crimson Tide of Alabama. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be played in the Coleman Auxiliary Volleyball Extension. Ole Miss and Alabama met earlier this year in Oxford, with the Crimson Tide taking a 3-0 win over the Rebels.
