OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore men's tennis player Erling Tveit will be among 32 of the top singles players in the country competing for the year's second national title, as the 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships open Thursday at the Racquet Club of Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio State University is the host school for this year's championships.
The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Championships and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
Tveit, a native of Oslo, Norway, qualified for the national indoor by capturing the Southeast Regional Championship in October. A 2005 All-SEC performer, Tveit defeated Middle Tennessee's Andreas Siljestrom in straight sets in the final. The Southeast is arguably the top tennis region in the country with four teams finishing the 2005 season ranked among the nation's top 10, including Ole Miss at No. 3. Eight teams from the region ended the year in the top 25.
With a 10-2 record this fall, Tveit, ranked No. 43 in the country, has picked up right where he left off in 2005. Playing in the top half of the lineup for Ole Miss last year as a freshman, Tveit helped the Rebels claim their second consecutive overall SEC Championship and their fourth straight SEC Western Division title. In addition, the Rebels advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
Tveit will take on Devin Mullings from Ohio State in the first round. Mullings, who received an at-large bid into the field, comes in ranked No. 19 in the nation with a 6-2 record.
Thursday's matches begin at 8:30 a.m. ET. First round doubles matches will be followed by first round singles matches, which start at 10:30 a.m., and run all day. The tournament concludes Sunday.
