OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss took to the road, and played tough early, but the fifth-ranked Florida Gators were too much for the Rebels as Florida defeated the Rebels 3-0 (18-30, 15-30, 12-30).
Nikki Hill led the Rebels on the night, tallying nine kills and hitting at a .192 clip to pace the visiting team. Junior Jaclyn Toohey added eight kills for the match.
Florida was led by the play of Jane Collymore, who put down 15 kills and hit .229 for the night.
The Gators out-blocked the Rebels 10-to-1 for the match.
"Twenty-eight errors will not get it done against a team like Florida, who capitalizes on every opening given to them," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We have got to take care of the ball and take care of the errors on our side of the net. Florida is a good team, though, and they make you have more errors than you would normally have in a match."
Ole Miss snagged the first point of the opening game, but the Gators answered with a kill from Collymore on the next point to get the home team on the board. The squads traded points from there with Toohey and Jones answering Florida's attacks to keep the Rebels on serve. Florida broke the trend with a block to put the home team up 5-4 before putting together a run to take the lead out further.
The Rebels fought back, tying the game at seven with a run to match that of the Gators. Florida had another run in it though, capped with a service ace that clipped the back of the baseline, causing Ole Miss to take a timeout down 15-11.
The Gators put three quick scores together out of the break to push ahead 20-12. It took only three more points from the home team to push the lead out 23-13 before Ole Miss would call its second timeout of the game.
The Rebels fought back, but couldn't cut the lead any closer, as Florida took the first game 30-18.
A kill off the hands of a Florida block attempt secured the first point of the second game for the Rebels, but again the Gators went to Kari Klinkenborg for an answering score. The Rebels then used another kill from Toohey and a kill on an overpass from Jones to take a 3-1 lead. The Gators fought back and used a run to push ahead of Ole Miss 8-6 before a service error by Florida cut the lead back to one. A series of passing errors by the Rebels helped Florida extend the lead back to three at 10-7.
Ole Miss called timeout when the lead crept back out to 13-7 in favor of the home team.
The Rebels called a second timeout when the lead pushed ahead to 20-11 in favor of the fifth-ranked Gators.
Ole Miss could not stop the Florida attack as the Gators claimed the second game 30-15.
The Gators grabbed the first point of the third game on a service error from the Rebels, and a service ace from Florida put the home team up 2-0 out of the gates. The Rebels were forced to call timeout down 7-1 early in the third stanza.
Florida continued to press the Rebels, taking the lead out to 17-5 and forcing Ole Miss to call its second timeout of the game to stop the run and regroup.
The Gators didn't let up, pushing the Rebels hard on the way to close out the third game and take the match with a 30-12 win in game three.
Ole Miss will close out the 2005 season on the road when the Rebels face-off against the University of Georgia Bulldogs. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. EST at the Ramsey Center on the campus of the University of Georgia.
