OXFORD, Miss. - Elizabeth Wood of Spring, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to play tennis for the University of Mississippi, head coach Mark Beyers announced Wednesday.
Wood was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation in Girls' 16s. She is currently coached by former Ole Miss All-American Vikrant Chadha, who played for the Rebels from 1997-2000 and helped them to two NCAA Final Fours and the 1997 SEC Championship.
"We are thrilled to have Elizabeth joining our program," Beyers said. "Since taking over the program, Whitt (Taber) and I have worked extremely hard in recruiting to establish a relationship with the top American players. Elizabeth is certainly one of the best American players to ever sign here, and we look forward to the next four years with her in our program.
"This shows the power of the Ole Miss tennis program. Vik had a great career here, and now he's a successful coach who has done a great job working with Elizabeth."
Of the top available players coming out of girls' junior tennis in the United States, Wood is ranked as the fifth best player in the state of Texas and among the top 30 in the nation. She is listed as a five-star recruit on several recruiting web sites, including TennisRecruiting.net. The web site lists her RPI rating as No. 24 in the nation.
Wood, who attends Northland Christian Academy, has participated in all of the national junior championships and reached the semifinals of the Hardcourts in 16s in 2003.
The Lady Rebels recently concluded the fall season and will open the 2006 spring season Jan. 28 against Tennessee-Chattanooga.
