OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebels rebounded from a slow start early in the day on the field against Ball State (1-2) as Ole Miss (4-3) took out the bats and mercy-ruled the Cardinals 8-0 in five innings on Saturday.
Mary Jane Callahan (2-1) picked up the win for the Rebels as the sophomore lefty worked 5.0 innings, striking out two batters and giving up no runs on three hits. Quincy Duran (0-1) gave up eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits on the day. She struck out one batter and walked four in the loss.
DeDe Justice and Lauren Rowe led the Rebels at the plate. Justice hit 1-for-2 with a solo home run, while Rowe was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
"We bounced back well tonight after losing to a good Illinois State team this morning," said Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts. "Last year I don't think we'd have been able to do that. We have to give ourselves opportunities in every game, and we did that tonight. We played aggressively.
"Brittany Warner and Brooke Turner really stood out in my mind defensively tonight," Letts said. "They played well as did Mary Jane Callahan. But we expect that of them. Kayla Mosley also played well for us. She lays it out on the line every play, and that's why she earned a spot on this team."
Ole Miss got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first, sparked by a two run double from Lauren Rowe to score Brittany Warner and DeDe Justice. Warner tripled to right center before Justice reached on a walk and then stole second prior to Rowe's at bat. Mandy Ott then singled to right field, advancing Rowe to third. Kayla Mosley entered as a pinch runner for Ott, stealing second on the next pitch.
Rowe scored on the next at bat and Mosley advanced to third as Rebecca McIntire grounded out to the shortstop. Mosley then scored on a double down the right field line from Callahan. Chloe Kloezeman reached on a walk in the next at bat, as did Jordan Chitwood to load the bases.
The Rebels added to the lead with two runs in the third inning. Mosley scored from third on a bunt laid down from Callahan. Mosley reached on a single before stealing second and then advancing to third on a hit from McIntire. Callahan scored two batters later when Chitwood laid down a sac bunt to bring the sophomore in from third.
Justice put the Rebels out to an eight run lead with a solo shot over the scoreboard in centerfield to lead off the fifth inning.
Ole Miss will return to action against No. 23 Southern Illinois in the second game of the day on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
