MURRAY, Ky. - Sophomore Mara Polonsky fired a career-high 585 in air rifle as Ole Miss finished in sixth place at the NCAA Sectionals Sunday.
Although the Rebels' sixth-place finish hurt their chances of making the NCAA Tournament as a team, the sophomore duo of Polonsky and Jennifer Lorenzen still could receive individual invites.
The team finished the day with a fourth-best score of 2283 in smallbore and a 2293 in air rifle for a total of 4576.
"As a team, we didn't accomplish what we set out to do," said head coach Valerie Boothe. "But we had some great individual performances. Mara Polonsky had a career high in air rifle and still has a shot at an individual invite, and Lorenzen did a great job in smallbore."
Another individual standout was Casey Phillips, who scored a perfect 100 on one of her air rifle targets, hitting the bull's-eye on all 10 of her shots for that target.
Jacksonville State placed first in the sectionals, followed by Kentucky, Memphis and Murray State. Tennessee Tech rounded out the top five.
"We're going to rebound," added Boothe. "We're getting ready for the conference championships, and now we know the things we need to work on to do well."
Ole Miss will be hosting the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships this year on Feb. 25-27 at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford.
