Women's Tennis Shuts Out Murray State 7-0

OXFORD, Miss. - Cooler temperatures plagued the area on Wednesday, but the Ole Miss women's tennis team was on fire from the get go in a 7-0 shutout over Murray State at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. With the win, the Lady Rebels improved to 4-2 on the season.
The Lady Rebels got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point and never looked back, cruising to straight-set victories in all six singles matches.
"We, as coaches, talked all week about how the girls were going to respond after the tough loss to South Alabama," head coach Mark Beyers said. "You never want to dwell on a loss, but rather use it as a learning process and get better, and I think we showed today that we are capable of doing that."
Temperatures hovered in the mid-50s for much of the afternoon Wednesday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, with wind gusts occasionally altering some of the points. Ole Miss competed in its second outdoor match of the season after Saturday's match with South Alabama in Mobile, Ala.
"Playing in conditions like this are tough," Beyers said. "We were a little worried earlier in the week that bad weather was coming and also the fact that we haven't played in these type of conditions yet. It was good though to get a match like this under our belts."
Senior Chloe Carlotti kept her streak alive, winning her sixth match in a row, defeating Anna Lask 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Carlotti improved to 13-4 overall and 6-0 at the top spot. Sophomore Ilona Somers turned in a great performance, blanking her opponent (Jaclyn Leeper) at No. 2 singles.
"Early in Illona's match, it seemed like it was going to be a tough match and then all of a sudden she couldn't miss," Beyers said. "It was like the scoreboard almost couldn't keep up with her."
The Lady Rebels return to action Saturday, Feb. 20 when they take on Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro. The match is set to begin at Noon.
