Coghlan, Maloney Help No. 15 Ole Miss Past Lamar

HOUSTON -- Sophomore third baseman Chris Coghlan went 2-of-4 with a home run in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie as No. 15 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss defeated Lamar 5-3 Friday afternoon at Reckling Park, in the opening game of the Coca Cola Classic, hosted by Rice University.
The loss was the first of the year for the Cardinals, who fell to 6-1. Ole Miss moved to 2-0 on the season.
After Lamar tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth, Coghlan lifted a 1-0 pitch from Lamar starter Derrick Gordon over the right field wall for a two-out solo home run.
The Cardinals threatened in the sixth after Colt Crawford hit a two-out single to put runners on first and second. Junior left-hander Matt Maloney then came on in relief of starter Mark Holliman, and Andrian Cantu hit an infield single to load the bases. Maloney, though, would get Andrew Leal to strike out looking to end the inning.
The Rebels picked up an insurance run in the seventh on Mark Wright's RBI double that scored Alex Presley to make it 5-3.
Maloney retired 10 straight batters after Cantu's infield single to recorded the save. He allowed just the one hit and struck out four in 3 1/3 innings.
Holliman (1-0) worked 5 2/3 innings to earn the win in his first start of the season. He allowed three runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out five.
Gordon (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and one walk, while striking out five in suffering the loss.
Both teams had seven hits each on the afternoon.
Chase Richards went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Lamar at the plate.
