COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Ole Miss opened the 2005 St. Joseph's Aggie Classic with a win as Mary Jane Callahan helped herself out with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to push Ole Miss (6-3) to a 3-2 win over Northwestern State (7-6).
With no one out, Callahan ripped the ball up the middle to score Vanessa Gibbs from third and end the inning. Gibbs pinch ran for Lauren Rowe who singled to lead off the inning. Gibbs advanced to third on a single from Rebecca McIntire and then scored on Callahan's single.
Callahan (3-1) also earned the win as she pitched a complete game, striking out 11 batters and walking none while allowing no earned runs. The Demons scored both runs on an error in the second inning.
Amanda Glenn (0-1) suffered the loss for Northwestern State as she came in with one out in the sixth to relieve Loni Raspberry. Raspberry struck out one batter and walked seven, while allowing two runs on three hits. Glenn struck out one batter but allowed the winning run on two hits.
"This is a great way for us to open this tournament," said Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts. "We had to fight hard to get the win, but this team dug down and found a way to win. They never panicked. We simply found a way to win."
Northwestern State got on the board first when two runs scored on an error by Justice. With runners at first and second, Justice took a pitchout and threw to second, but the throw was wide of the bag and sailed to the fence in right centerfield allowing both runners to score and put the Demons up 2-0.
The Rebels got on the board in the bottom of the third when Jordan Chitwood led off the inning with a walk. Brooke Turner then laid down a bunt to advance Chitwood, but Turner reached base safely when the throw to first was high and rolled to the fence. Chitwood moved to third. The Rebels scored a batter later when Brittany Warner popped the ball to left field and it dropped into shallow left, allowing Chitwood to score and Turner to move to third.
Ole Miss loaded the bases from there, but no one was able to score as the Demons got the force at home on a shot from Rowe and then McIntire popped up to short to end the inning.
The Rebels again scored in the bottom of the fourth when Kloezeman scored off a bunt from Turner. Kloezeman reached on a double, before moving to third on a sac bunt from Chitwood. She then scored on the Turner bunt to tie the game at two.
Ole Miss threatened again in the sixth inning, loading the bases again with one out, but the Rebels could not get a run across the plate again until the winning run crossed in the bottom of the seventh off Callahan's single.
Ole Miss will return to action against the No. 21/23 Aggies of Texas A&M at 4:45 p.m. to close out the first day of action at the St. Joseph's Aggie Classic.
