OXFORD, Miss. - Mary Jane Callahan, a sophomore left-handed pitcher from Muenster, Texas, was named the Southeastern Conference's Pitcher of the Week on Monday as selected by the league office.

Callahan is the first-ever Pitcher of the Week selection for Ole Miss (9-4) and second ever weekly award winner for the Rebels. DeDe Justice was named Player of the Week in her sophomore season the week of March 17, 2003.

"We are very proud of Mary Jane for receiving this honor," said Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts. "She did an outstanding job. The biggest thing is she pitched her best to help her team get a big win, but she hasn't pitched her best yet. She'll continue to work hard to help her team grow and progress. It's a great honor to be named Pitcher of the Week in the Southeastern Conference. She is truly in elite company."

Callahan pitched her way to a 2-0 record on the week, leading the Rebels to wins over Northwestern State and No. 21 Texas A&M. The loss was the first on the season for the nationally-ranked Aggies, and the 2-0 shutout pushed the Rebels to the 2005 Aggie Classic Championship.

It marked the first tournament title for Ole Miss since the 2002 Rebel/Easton Invitational.

Callahan struck out 19 batters and walked only one batter in the two games as she posted a 0.00 ERA with only two runs scored in the two games. Both runs came on errors in the defense. The sophomore only allowed eight hits on the weekend and only four Texas A&M batters reached base.

In addition to her play on the mound, Callahan also performed well at the plate. She hit .400 for the weekend, driving in the game winning run against Northwestern State and laying down a squeeze bunt and pressuring the Aggie defense into an error to allow the game winning run to cross the plate against Texas A&M. She scored two runs and notched 5 RBI on the weekend.

Callahan improved to 4-1 on the season with the wins as she pitched her second complete-game shutout of the season and moved into third all-time at Ole Miss with seven complete-game shutouts for her career.

The Rebels will return to action on Tuesday, when Callahan and Ole Miss take to the field against the Samford Bulldogs at noon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
