GARC Championships Conclude Day One

OXFORD, Miss. - The second of three days of the Great America Rifle Conference Championships at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center closed Saturday afternoon with a tiebreaking shoot-off determining the tournament's air rifle champion.

In the finals of the air rifle portion of the Championships, Memphis' Beth Tidmore defeated Army's Christopher Abalo in a five-shot shoot-off for the conference individual title. Tidmore had scored a 593 and Abalo a 594 in the team competition to reach the finals.

However, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, led by Kristina Fehlings' and Andrea Franzen's marks of 591, captured the team air rifle title with a total of 2,349.

Ole Miss came in fifth place with 2,312 points, with top scorer freshman Shannon Wilson shooting a career-high 588 to reach the 10-person final. Sophomore Jennifer Lorenzen registered a 585 to place 12th individually.

Memphis finished second behind Nebraska with 2,333 points. Army placed third (2,329), Kentucky fourth (2,328), Ole Miss fifth (2,312), Xavier sixth (2,298) and West Virginia in seventh (2,272).

The top ten individual finishes were as follows: (1) Beth Tidmore, Memphis (2) Christopher Abalo, Army, (3) Kristina Fehlings, Nebraska, (4) Andrea Franzen, Nebraska, (5) Krissey Bahnsen, Memphis, (6) Vicki Goss, Kentucky, (7) David Amiot, Army, (8) Misty Chanek, Nebraska, (9) Katie Benjamin, Memphis and (10) Shannon Wilson, Ole Miss. Their scores from the finals were not available at the time of release.

Competition wraps up Sunday with the smallbore portion of the Championships.

The 2005 GARC All Conference Awards were given out Friday night at the awards banquet. Lorenzen was named to the second team in air rifle and honorable mention in combined score. Junior Natasha Phillips was recognized as the Rebels' Scholar Athlete of the Year.
