No. 15 Ole Miss Evens Weekend Series With Southern Illinois

OXFORD, Miss. -- Freshman shortstop Zack Cozart went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead No. 15 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss to a 9-2 win over Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon, in front of 3,643 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
With the win, the Rebels (5-2) evened this weekend's three-game series and snapped the Salukis' (5-3) five-game win streak. Southern Illinois won Friday's series opener 8-7 in 10 innings. The two teams will meet in the rubber-match Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Cozart hit his first career home run with a two-run shot in the second inning to put the Rebels up 3-0. He later had an RBI single in the fifth to extend the Rebels' lead to 7-0.
Brian Pettway and Stephen Head also homered in the contest. Pettway hit his third of the year with a lead-off shot in the third to make it 4-0. Head hit his second home run of the season with a two-run blast in the sixth to make it 9-2 and cap the afternoon's scoring.
Head (1-0) also worked seven innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Senior right-hander P.J. Finigan (1-1) suffered the loss. He was charged with seven runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. He also struck out three.
The Rebels out-hit the Salukis 13-8 on the afternoon.
Junior DH Matt Brewer and sophomore center fielder Kevin Koski both had two hits to lead Southern Illinois at the plate.
Junior right-hander Anthony Cupps (2-0, 2.45 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday afternoon for the Rebels, while the Salukis are expected to counter with senior right-hander Jason Chavez (1-1, 5.59 ERA).
