OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss (12-5) hit its stride early in the first game, but the bats went cold in the second as the Rebels split a doubleheader with Evansville (6-7) on Saturday.
Ole Miss claimed the first game 5-0, but dropped the second 1-0 as Katie Murkle tossed a one-hitter for Evansville.
"We didn't work hard enough to get the win in the second game, like we did in the first," said Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts. "You can't beat a competitive team like Evansville if you aren't going to execute and take opportunities when they give them to you."
Evansville got on the board first with a run in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead in the second game of the day when Abby Liden scored on a single to right field from Meaghan Flanagan. Liden reached on a single before advancing to second on a sac bunt from Casey Clutch.
That was all the Purple Aces would need to pick up the win.
The Rebels threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners at first and second, but the Aces' pitcher got a strikeout and a ground out in the last two Ole Miss batters to end the Rebels' hopes of a rally.
Ole Miss got on the board in the second inning when Chloe Kloezeman took a 3-2 pitch and sent the ball out of the park over the left center field fence, putting the Rebels up 1-0.
Evansville threatened in the top of the fourth, getting a base runner on a walk who advanced on an error on the throw from third to first on the next batter. Both runners advanced to second and third, but the Rebels sat down the next two batters to end the inning.
The Purple Aces broke up the no-hitter in the top of the sixth inning with a shot back at the pitcher that hit the tip of Callahan's glove, but the Rebels ended the threat with two straight outs.
The Rebels opened it up in the sixth inning, adding four runs to put Ole Miss up 5-0. The Rebels loaded the bases with one out and a string of three straight singles drove in the four runs.
Ole Miss then held off the Purple Aces in the top of the seventh to notch the 5-0 win.
Ole Miss and Evansville will conclude the series with a rubber match on Sunday at noon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
