FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Ole Miss senior Antwon Hicks finally claimed the one title that had eluded him in his prestigious career by winning the 60-meter hurdle championship at the 2005 SEC Indoor Championships. Hicks ran a season's best time of 7.64 in claiming his first SEC title.

"I didn't get a quick start and started off sloppy," said Hicks, the 2004 NCAA Indoor Champion in the 60-meter hurdles. "My race was all right, a little shaky, and at the middle everyone was even. I ran as hard as I could at the end. Because I didn't get a good start, I had to work for this win."

Fellow senior Brandon Atkinson also had an outstanding day as he placed second in the triple jump earning All-SEC honors for the first time in his career. Atkinson leaped 52-9.5 missing out on first place by just an inch and half. Jaanus Uudmae of Arkansas was the winner with his mark of 52-11.

"It was very exciting to have two individual champions with Hicks and Glass (Shantel, long jump winner)," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "With Atkinson being so close, it was an outstanding meet."

With Hicks winning the 60-meter hurdle title and Glass claiming the long jump title, Ole Miss won two individual event titles at the SEC Indoor Championships for the first time since 1984 when Clarence Daniel won the 440-yard dash and Tony Dees won the 60-yard hurdles.

The Rebel men's 4x400-meter relay team composed of seniors Demondrick Shumaker, Mark Gregory and Franz Bernard and sophomore Demarco Potts finished in eighth with their time of 3:12.27.

Ole Miss finished the meet in eighth place in the men's team standings with 33 points. Arkansas was the top finisher in the team standings with 155 points. Ole Miss scored more than 30 points in the meet for the first time since 1999.

The Rebel women finished the meet in 11th place with 10 points. Tennessee won the women's team title with 135.5 points.

Ole Miss will return to Arkansas for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12. The meet will take place in the Randal Tyson Track Complex.
