OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team won the doubles point against Kansas State and then got a huge lift from its top three players on the way to a 7-0 shutout at the Gillom Sports Center Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rebels improved to 3-1 with the win and 5-0 against the Wildcats (1-2).
With their 6-1 against Kansas on Friday, the Lady Rebels are now 9-1 against the state of Kansas.
Ole Miss took the early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Freshmen Carlin Cochran and Nika Koukhartchouk defeated K-State's Tereza Prochazkova and Fernanda Da Valle 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis, ranked No. 39, got down 2-0 but eventually broke back on their way to an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
Tomatis won her sixth match in a row when she handed Wildcat Jessica Simosa a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 3 singles to give Ole Miss a 2-0 advantage. Tomatis has now won seven of her last eight in singles and went 4-0 in singles and doubles for the second weekend in a row.
Lady Rebel sophomore Ilona Somers gave her team a 3-0 lead with a straight set win over KSU's Tamara Kvaraskhelia at No. 2 singles. The two battled back and forth in the first set. Tied at 5-5, Somers won the final two games and used that momentum to shut out Kvaraskhelia in the second set, 6-0.
In a battle of two nationally-ranked seniors, Carlotti faced KSU's Rosenberg for the second time in her career. The first meeting in last year's dual match in Manhattan, Kan., Rosenberg, ranked No. 109 in the nation, came away victorious in three sets. This time, Carlotti, who is ranked No. 32, would get revenge in a two and half hour three-setter. After dropping the first set 6-4, Carlotti turned it up in the second to win 6-1. The two struggled to hold serve in the third set, trading breaks. Carlotti broke again in the ninth game and held serve to close out Rosenberg 6-4 and clinch the Ole Miss victory. Carlotti has now won six of her last seven matches.
"To beat a team of this quality 7-0 is impressive," head coach Mark Beyers said. "They had just played the No. 25 team (BYU) to 4-3. Their (KSU) top three players battled us hard. We outfought them in the end. Ilona wore her opponent out in the first set and played great in the second set. Chloe battled back in her match and was mentally tougher, and Vicki played another solid match. It's good when you can take some punches, stay in the match and eventually come out on top. It makes it easier on the bottom three positions when the match is already decided.
"Overall this was a great weekend. We picked up two wins against the Big 12. Now we have to get ready to go on the road and play a solid South Alabama team outside."
Koukhartchouk downed K-State's Prochazkova 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot to increase the Lady Rebel lead to 5-0. Renaudin beat Judith Diaz 6-0, 7-6(1) at No. 5 singles, and Preethi Subramanian topped Fernanda Da Valle 6-4, 6-3 on court six to complete the sweep.
The Lady Rebels will travel to Mobile, Ala., Saturday, Feb. 12 to face South Alabama at 10 a.m.
