OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's track and field team moved up four spots in the latest rankings, jumping from 22nd in the Trackwire 25 power rankings up to 18th place.
"We have continued to improve each week as a team," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "These rankings are based on how people think we will finish at the NCAA meet and our team strength is beginning to show. We are getting to the point where we have some quantity to go along with our quality."
The Rebels have been ranked all indoor season, beginning the season ranked 22nd before dipping to 24th in the second week of rankings. Last weekend the Ole Miss men moved back up to 22nd before leaping to a season's best rank of 18th this week.
Available online since the 1997 season, the Trackwire 25 has established itself as the most widely respected and reported ranking of Division I collegiate track & field teams. The Trackwire 25 is compiled by respected track & field statistician Gary Verigin.
The Trackwire 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by information gathered from coaches and NCAA-qualifying competitions across the country. This projection is generated by scoring the Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA track and field event.
Senior hurdler Antwon Hicks continues to be the catalyst for the Rebels. Hicks recorded his second time of the season under 7.70 in the 60-meter hurdles with his winning time of 7.69 at last weekend's Meyo Invitational. Hicks is the national leader in the event.
Fellow Rebels senior Shantel Glass (8th) and junior Edward McCall (12th) are ranked in the Dandy Dozen for the long jump, while senior Brandon Atkinson (5th) made the Dandy Dozen in the triple jump.
The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field squads will return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, when they travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Invitational. The meet will open on Friday with the conclusion of events on Saturday, Feb. 12.
