Holliman Shuts Down Sam Houston State

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior right-hander Mark Holliman allowed one run and struck out a season-high 11 in eight innings of work to lead No. 16 (Baseball America) Ole Miss to its sixth straight win with a 4-2 victory over Sam Houston State in the opening game of this weekend's three-game non-conference series Friday evening at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Holliman (3-0) limited the Bearkats (7-9-1) to one run on three hits and four walks to earn the win.
Junior right-hander Brian Pettway worked the ninth to earn his second save of the year.
Leading 2-1 in the fifth, Pettway broke the game open with a two-run single to score both Chris Coghlan and Stephen Head. Pettway finished the evening 1-for-3 with two RBI to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games.
Coghlan went 3-for-4 with an RBI as Ole Miss (11-3) out-hit Sam Houston State 11-6 on the evening.
The Bearkats brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth. Aaron Ruchti hit his first home run of the season with a two-out solo home run over the wall in left center to make it 4-2. Josh Warren followed with a single and Roy Merritt reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Pettway then coaxed Sean Jones to ground out to the pitcher to end the game.
Sophomore right-hander Timothy Gray (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings. He also struck out one.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Junior left-hander Stephen Head (2-0, 2.37 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss, opposite Sam Houston State junior right-hander Zach Duncan (0-1, 4.20 ERA).
