OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior outfielder Brian Pettway was named the Southeastern Conference's Player of the Week Monday by the conference office.

In five games last week, Pettway batted .438, going 7-for-16 with three home runs and seven RBI. He also had a 1.063 slugging percentage for the week. In the Rebels' 2-1 series win over No. 6 Florida, Pettway went 4-for-9 with three home runs and five RBI.

In Ole Miss' 6-5 win over Southeast Missouri State last Tuesday, Pettway hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. He later recorded his first career multi-home run game in the 10-4 win over Florida last Saturday. On Sunday, Pettway went 1-for-2 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 21 games and tie the school record set by Kary Bridges in 1992 and later tied by Chad Sterbens in 2002.

"Obviously, we are very proud of Brian," said Ole Miss Head Coach Mike Bianco. "Brian is very deserving of this honor and he has had just a great start to this season. We certainly came into this season looking for big things from Brian and so far he hasn't disappointed."

For the season, Pettway is leading the team with a .434 batting average, which ranks fifth in the SEC. He also is tied for second in the conference in home runs with eight and is tied for second in RBI with 28.

Ole Miss is 17-4 on the season, including 2-1 in the SEC. The Rebels begin a nine-game road swing Tuesday evening with a 6:30 p.m., game against Memphis at AutoZone Park.
