INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Ole Miss senior linebacker Rob Robertson of Centreville, Miss., has been selected to receive a $7,500 NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
"While many of our student-athletes are very successful in the classroom and their individual sport, few achieve the remarkable record that Rob Robertson accomplished during his career at Ole Miss," said Athletics Director Pete Boone. "He is one of only two Southeastern Conference student-athletes to receive this NCAA postgraduate scholarship. We congratulate Rob for not only the honor it brings to the University of Mississippi, but also to his family."
The NCAA awarded 56 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 28 male student-athletes and 28 female student-athletes who participated in fall sports, which included women's badminton (emerging sport), men's and women's cross country, women's field hockey, football, women's rugby (emerging sport), men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and men's water polo.
The selection of Robertson to receive the prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship marked the ninth time for an Ole Miss football player to be so honored. Previous NCAA postgraduate scholarship winners from the Rebel football program include guard Stan Hindman (1966), tailback Steve Hindman (1969), split end Ken Toler (1981), quarterback Kent Austin (1986), free safety Jeff Noblin (1987), offensive lineman Danny Hoskins (1988), tight end-outside linebacker Wesley Walls (1989), and free safety Todd Sandroni (1990).
Robertson, who has been accepted to the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, compiled a 3.95 grade point average, majoring in biological sciences, at Ole Miss.
As a senior, he was named first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. He has earned SEC Academic Honor Roll and Chancellor's Honor Roll mention in every semester he has attended Ole Miss. He is a member of the National Dean's List, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and is a nominee for the International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on Medicine.
Robertson is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has participated in "Reading with the Rebels" every year of his Ole Miss career. He is vice-president of Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-medicine society and has visited area retirement homes, high schools, churches and elementary schools. He is active in "Rebels against Drunk Driving" and served on a medical mission trip to Honduras in 2004, assisting doctors during surgery, and also studied abroad in Belize in 2003.
Athletically, Robertson was second on the squad in total tackles with 73 as a senior, which was ninth among linebackers in the SEC. During his career, he had 149 tackles and two pass interceptions. He won the Jeff Hamm Award as the Most Improved Defensive Player on the squad in 2003, was named to the Coaches' All-SEC Freshman Team in 2001, and was selected by his teammates to serve as a team captain for the 2004 season.
In addition to the fall sport honorees, the NCAA also awards 116 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in winter and spring sports in which the NCAA conducts championships or participates in as an emerging sport, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
Nomination forms are sent to faculty athletics representatives for fall sports in September, for winter sports in late November, and for spring sports in January. Selections are made three times each academic year. The application must be submitted during the appropriate seasonal category for the sport to the appropriate regional committee chair. Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees, and the award recipients are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
