OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore Jennifer Lorenzen has been named honorable mention All-American in air rifle by the National Rifle Association.
She is the first Rebel to receive All-American status in the nine-year history of the Ole Miss rifle program.
"It's like icing on the cake," said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. "We set our goals to make the NCAAs and we fell short, but we finished very strong. To have an All-American for the first time is really special. It is the most prestigious individual honor for our sport, and I am honored that (Lorenzen) is a part of our team."
The NRA names 10 first-team, 10 second-team and five honorable mention All-Americans each year in the smallbore and air rifle categories based on the competitors' scoring averages throughout the season. This year, there are an estimated 400-500 rifle shooters across the country at NCAA institutions. Of these, 80 applied for All-American status, and Lorenzen is one of just 25 selected for the honor.
Lorenzen will be honored with the other All-Americans in a ceremony at the conclusion of the NCAA Rifle Championships this Saturday, March 12.
Previously this season, Lorenzen was named to the All Conference second team in air rifle and honorable mention in smallbore by the Great America Rifle Conference.
Lorenzen also will compete alongside teammates Shannon Wilson and Casey Phillips at the 2005 Junior Olympics in April.
