OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Rebels wrapped up the second practice of the Ed Orgeron era at the indoor practice facility on Wednesday, a day that saw more cold rain than Monday's first inside practice.
The two-hour practice in helmets and shorts was as up-tempo as the first day of spring drills and included more offensive, defensive and special teams drills, culminating in a non-contact, points-based competition period at the end of practice in which the defense rallied to victory over the offense.
"We added more offense and defense to our packages today and while I thought our players knew what to do in those situations, we had more errors than we needed to," Orgeron said. "On offense, I like the way our running game is developing, but we put the ball on the ground too many times today. We must have had three or four fumbles, counting all the drills and reps, and that's too many. We must eliminate that. It's important to run the ball effectively, which we did at times, but it's more important to take care of it.
"Today, I thought we finished the practice much better (than Monday) and guys were more relaxed. I saw a lot of enthusiasm when someone would make a big play - that's what we want."
Orgeron said he was pleased that there have been no injuries to speak of after two practices.
Orgeron also noted that even though he is the team's defensive coordinator, he is enjoying also rooting for the offense now.
An estimated 400 fans showed up to witness the Rebels' practice, more than the estimated 250 that came to see the Rebels on Monday.
Spring drills will continue Friday for the third of 15 scheduled practices. Friday will also be the first of 10 practices at which the players are allowed to wear pads.
The annual Red-Blue "Grove Bowl" game is scheduled for Saturday, April 9.
