HAMMOND, La. - Sophomore left fielder Mark Wright hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie and propel No. 20 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss to a 10-8 non-conference win over Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday evening, in front of 1,172 at Alumni Field.
Wright's home run was his sixth of the season and highlighted a three-run inning for the Rebels (23-10).
Ole Miss trailed 6-3 before tying the game with three runs in the sixth. Cooper Osteen hit a two-out, two-run single to pull the Rebels to within 6-5 and Chris Coghlan followed with a double to score Osteen and tie the game.
Junior right-hander Stoney Stone (1-0) worked 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn his first career win. He allowed one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out two.
Sophomore left-hander Brandon Carlton (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run one hit and one walk and striking out one in 1/3 of an inning of relief.
Junior right-hander Brian Pettway pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his third save of the season.
Wright finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Pettway went 3-for-3 to lead the Rebels at the plate. Pettway has now recorded at least one hit in 31-of-33 games this season.
Ryan Spencer went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Gary Duhe was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Lions (15-20). Duhe hit his third home run of the season with a two-run shot in the eighth to make it 9-8. Steve Clevenger also went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Ole Miss out-hit Southeastern Louisiana 14-13 on the evening.
Ole Miss scored three runs in the top of the first inning, before the Lions answered with four in the bottom of the first. Southeastern Louisiana then added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 6-3 lead.
The Rebels will next open a three-game Southeastern Conference series at No. 12 LSU Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., at Alex Box Stadium.
