ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - The Ole Miss men's golf team improved by two strokes with a second-round 309 to move to 620 overall, but stay in 12th place after day two of the SEC Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club on Saturday.
The Florida Gators (586), ranked No. 6 in the nation by Golfweek, jumped ahead of the pack with a second-round 292 to take a five-stroke over Auburn (591) heading into Sunday's final round. The Tigers lead a middle pack of six teams all separated by just seven strokes.
Kentucky is in third with a 592, Georgia in fourth with a 594, Alabama in fifth with a 595, Tennessee in sixth with a 596 and South Carolina in seventh with a 598.
Heavy winds and challenging course conditions have affected the play of all teams as there continue to be high scores across the board.
"We've caught the worst of the wind both days and got off to terrible starts," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "The greens are fast and the pins are in the toughest positions we've seen this season. But we will be back playing for pride tomorrow."
Senior Jordan Dempsey has been Ole Miss' most consistent golfer with a first-round 75 and second-round 73. His 148 overall ties him for 17th heading into Sunday's final round.
Sophomore Brice Bailey has carded rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154, pitting him tied for 37th. Other Ole Miss scores include a 79-78--157 by sophomore Kyle Ellis, an 85-79--164 by senior Lucas Boyd and an 82-82--164 by sophomore Callum Macaulay.
Sunday's final round will take place Sunday morning with the Southeastern Conference Championships awards to be presented following the conclusion of final-round action.
