OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone announced Friday that Georgia Tech has been added to the 2010 and 2011 Rebel football schedules.
The two-year contract calls for the teams to meet in Atlanta, Ga., on Sept. 11, 2010, while the Yellow Jackets will visit Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/ Hollingsworth Field on Sept. 10, 2011.
"Scheduling games with schools that have quality football programs such as Georgia Tech is an important part of Ole Miss' effort to broaden its scope within the region," Boone said. "Ole Miss also has a strong alumni base in the greater Atlanta area and that base is growing every year."
Ole Miss last played Georgia Tech in football in the 1971 Peach Bowl in Atlanta as the Billy Kinard-coached Rebels defeated the Yellow Jackets 41-18 to complete a 10-2 campaign.
Although there was a time when both teams were members of the Southeastern Conference, Ole Miss and Georgia Tech didn't meet on a regular basis. In fact, the overall series record is 2-1 in favor of Georgia Tech.
The teams first met on October 12, 1946 when Georgia Tech defeated Ole Miss 24-7 in Atlanta in the only regular season meeting. Prior to the 1971 Peach Bowl, the only other meeting came in the January 1, 1953 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans when Tech defeated John Vaught's Rebels 24-7.
