OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss linebacker Kelvin Robinson of Jackson, Miss., has been selected as the 2005 recipient of the Chucky Mullins Courage Award.

The award, sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, honors the late Chucky Mullins, who had his Ole Miss career come to an end during the 1989 Homecoming game against Vanderbilt when he was paralyzed after making a tackle. After returning to his studies at Ole Miss, Mullins passed away on May 6, 1991.

The Chucky Mullins Courage Award goes to a rising senior defensive player at Ole Miss. Each winner then wears Mullins' No. 38 during that senior season.

Robinson, who has worn No. 39 his first four years (including his 2001 redshirt season) with the Rebels, will be in No. 38 Saturday afternoon when Ole Miss conducts its annual Red-Blue spring football game, set for 1:00 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.

The selection of Robinson was announced during Friday night's 16th annual Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet, which is sponsored each year by Phi Beta Sigma and Phi Kappa Psi fraternities.

"From what I have learned about Chucky Mullins, I believe Kelvin Robinson is a tremendous representative of this prestigious award," said new Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron following the announcement. "Kelvin is an excellent choice to carry on the legacy of Chucky Mullins at Ole Miss."

"It's an honor to be selected to represent Chucky Mullins and all former Ole Miss players who have worn his number since this award was established," Robinson said. "I appreciate the award, and I look forward to the challenge of helping carry on his legacy and taking on his `never quit' attitude."

During his career at Ole Miss, Robinson has earned three letters as a strong safety while seeing action in 36 of 37 games, including 23 starts. Robinson, who was moved to linebacker this spring when the Rebels switched from a 4-2-5 defensive alignment to a 4-3, has 153 career total tackles, including 117 solo hits. He has been credited with 15 tackles for a minus 57 yards, has three and one-half quarterback sacks for a minus 18 yards, caused four fumbles, recovered two fumbles, broken up seven passes, applied one QB pressure, intercepted one pass, and blocked one kick.

One of Robinson's biggest plays as a Rebel came in 2003 against Texas Tech when he returned a pass interception 80 yards for a touchdown, the seventh longest in Ole Miss history.

Robinson, who played at Lanier High school in Jackson, joins 15 other former Ole Miss Rebels to receive the Chucky Mullins Courage Award. They include Chris Mitchell, Jeff Carter, Trea Southerland, Johnny Dixon, Alundis Brice, Michael Lowery, Derek Jones, Nate Wayne, Gary Thigpen, Ronnie Heard, Anthony Magee, Kevin Thomas, Lanier Goethie, Jamil Northcutt, and Eric Oliver.
