No. 22 Ole Miss Completes Sweep Of Mississippi State

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Eric Fowler worked six strong innings and junior left-hander Stephen Head pitched the final three innings to earn the save as No. 22 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss completed a three-game sweep of Mississippi State with a 9-1 Southeastern Conference victory Sunday afternoon, in front of 5,501 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The sweep was the Rebels' first of the Bulldogs since 1978 in Oxford.
Ole Miss (32-13, 12-9 SEC) finishes the weekend tied with LSU for second place in the SEC Western Division, one game behind first-place Alabama. The win was also the Rebels' fifth straight, while Mississippi State (28-15, 9-11 SEC) has now dropped four consecutive games.
Fowler (3-2) limited the Bulldogs to one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out seven before giving way to Head in the seventh.
Head worked three scoreless innings to earn his third save. He allowed three hits and walked none, while striking out one.
Zack Cozart and Justin Henry both homered in the game for the Rebels. Cozart hit his sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the sixth to break open a 3-1 game. Henry belted his second of the year with a three-run blast in the seventh to cap a four-run seventh and make it 9-1.
Ed Easley hit his second home run of the season for Mississippi State with a solo home run in the fifth that made it 3-1.
Cozart, Miles Franklin and Brian Pettway all had two hits each for the Rebels, as Ole Miss out-hit Mississippi State 12-6.
Joseph McCaskill went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
The Rebels will return to action Tuesday evening when Ole Miss plays host to Southeastern Louisiana at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Ole Miss will then host Murray State on Wednesday before opening a three-game SEC series at Auburn next Friday evening.
