OXFORD, Miss. - Facing humid 90-degree temperatures, the Ole Miss football team was put to the test physically Thursday morning in its second day in full pads. Rebel head coach Ed Orgeron said the conditions were ideal for challenging his club.

"The players were really tested today," said the first-year head coach. "It got tough. Some guys responded and some guys didn't. The weather was just what we needed today."

While continuing position work and skill drills, Ole Miss also spent nearly half the practice on some full-squad, offense vs. defense work.

The practice provided an excellent challenge specifically for the cornerback position, where Orgeron said the competition has been strong.

"They had a tough day," he said, referring to the cornerbacks. "It's a tough position in our defense, and we're relying on them to play a lot of single coverage. We're finding out who can do what, and it's a see-saw battle right now."

Offensively, Orgeron continues to be pleased with the effort of quarterback Micheal Spurlock through the first six days of preseason workouts.

"I haven't seen him have a bad day yet," said Orgeron. "He's competing hard in every drill and hasn't missed a snap yet. I see his leadership really coming too."

The morning workout was the Rebels' only practice of the day, as the players met with the media in the afternoon.
