OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Rebels picked up where they left off on Monday, following up with two-a-day practice on Monday after Saturday's scrimmage. The squad took Sunday off.
Head coach Ed Orgeron came into Monday's drills looking for his team to build on what it learned in Saturday's scrimmage, and the first-year head coach felt he saw just that in his team.
"There was a lot of improvement today on the execution," Orgeron said. "There was a lot less movement on the line of scrimmage by the receivers and we had a lot better execution in both the offense and defense. We paid much more attention to detail today."
The Rebels ran through special teams practice to open things up before moving into drill work on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The squad ran seven-on-seven drills and continued to work from there with ones against ones and twos against twos.
Coach Orgeron looked for steady improvement on both sides of the ball including the performance of the first team defense, the running game and the play of his quarterbacks.
"We really did a good job (Saturday) on first team defense," Orgeron said. "The only time we scored on the first team defense was when we put the ball on the 20 yard line. The run game gained 243 yards rushing but had too many negative yards. We've addressed how we lost the ball and how not to lose it."
The Rebels will continue work this afternoon as Ole Miss continues preseason preparations for the season opening game against Memphis on September 5. The game will be played at the Liberty Bowl and is slated for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff time on ESPN.
