PINEHURST, N.C. - Ole Miss head women's golf coach Meghan Bolger was one of four golfers to advance to the semifinals of the North and South Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., over the weekend.
After battling an eye infection on Friday morning, Bolger defeated Ann Laney 3 and 2 in the match play quarterfinals.
In the semis on Saturday, Bolger faced 17-year-old phenom Morgan Pressel, ranked the top amateur in the country. The Ole Miss coach came from one down early in the round to go two up through 10 holes, which was the first time Pressel had been behind an opponent in the tournament.
The two players fought neck-and-neck through the next eight holes to take it to a playoff. After both shooting par on the 19th hole, Bolger was nipped by Pressel on the 20th after Pressel birdied the hole to Bolger's par.
"It was exciting to be in this position," said Bolger, who will enter her fifth season as the head women's golf coach this fall. "There are a lot of collegiate players at this tournament, and I have seen most of the field before in college tournaments either as a player or a coach. It's exciting for Ole Miss to get good exposure in these types of summer amateur events. It's a good start to what will hopefully be a great season."
Bolger was not the only Rebel in the field, as pupil Katie Davidson, a junior on the 2005-06 squad, also participated in the North and South.
