OXFORD, Miss. - With the first gameweek of the 2005 football campaign on the horizon, Ole Miss conducted a structured dress rehearsal Saturday for its Sept. 5 season opener at Memphis.
Held in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for 1:45, the situational scrimmage saw ones vs. twos and featured such details as the pregame coin toss and a halftime speech in the lockerroom.
First-year Rebel head coach Ed Orgeron said the objective was for the players to experience the organization of gameday.
"We worked all day on scripting special situations and simulating the things we need to see," he said. "The coaches did a really good job of preparing. I thought overall it was a pretty good organizational day. We simulated everything in a fashion that it will be Sept. 5 and gave them a taste of what they are going to go through."
The jockeying for the starting right defensive end spot has been intense throughout preseason, and Orgeron noted the positive strides made by senior Corvelli Haynes on Saturday.
"Corvelli really showed up," said Orgeron. "I think he gained a lot of ground today. Obviously we're going to play a rotation there, but he may end up being the starter. He showed me enough today."
Orgeron also expressed the significance of true freshman Michael Oher's presence on the offensive line.
"We need him to play," Orgeron said. "In my mind, he needs to be a No. 1. As soon as he is able to grasp everything, he will be a starter."
In addition, Orgeron announced on Saturday that sophomore DB Kareem Moore has decided to transfer from Ole Miss.
The Rebels take Sunday off from workouts before continuing their preparation for Memphis on Monday. The Labor Day matchup with the Tigers is set for 3:30 p.m. CT at the Liberty Bowl and will be televised by ESPN.
