OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football squad took the practice fields for a fourth time on Tuesday afternoon, but this time the whole team was together, including returnees, signees and walk-ons, for the first time in preparation for the fall schedule.
"It was good to see the whole team together," said first-year head coach Ed Orgeron. "I think it took a little getting used to. The transition wasn't as quick as I wanted it to be. Guys kind of didn't know where they were going.
"I thought this morning we had an excellent walk-through. We had a lot of great film work today, made some corrections. There are some guys that are coming to the top. I thought (freshman OL) Michael Oher had an excellent pash-rush drill. (Junior college transfer) Milton Collins made some big plays. Will Moseley is kicking the ball well. Robert Lane did some good things today. There were flashes all over the field, we just have to put it all together."
This afternoon, under relatively cooler temperatures thanks to a series of clouds, the team had a longer practice, just over three hours, with extended sessions of offense versus defense with both first and second-stringers in addition to the individual position workouts and conditioning drills.
Two freshmen signees, LaMark Armour and Michael Hicks, switched from defense to offense on Tuesday, as Coach Orgeron explained they are trying to add depth to the tight end position, which he expects will be a big part of the new offense.
"LaMark Armour was doing a fantastic job at defensive end, but we also felt he could play tight end with Mike Hicks," Orgeron said. "We're going to try it out. We don't know if it will last, but hopefully one of them can stay (at tight end)."
Coach Orgeron also announced that freshman defensive lineman Jada Brown has decided to leave the team. "Jada Brown has decided that he no longer wanted to play football, so he is no longer on the team," Orgeron said.
The Rebels will continue practice Wednesday afternoon, with Thursday schedule for a morning practice and Media Day at 1:30 p.m.
