OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone announced Thursday the addition of the University of Missouri to the 2006 and 2007 football schedules.
"We are pleased to announce the addition of another opponent from a Bowl Championship Series conference in Missouri of the Big 12 Conference," Boone said. "We haven't played Missouri since 1979, and adding them to our schedule helps broaden the exposure of our football team and the University to another part of the country."
The first game with Missouri calls for the Rebels to play the Tigers in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 9 next season, with the return game set for Oxford on Sept. 8, 2007.
Since beginning its football program in 1893, Ole Miss has played Missouri four times with the Tigers holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. The 2007 game will mark the first time for the two teams to meet on the Oxford campus. Games in 1973 and 1978 were played in Columbia, while the 1974 and 1979 meetings were played in Jackson.
The addition of Missouri marks the third time in recent months for Ole Miss to announce the scheduling of a future football opponent from a BCS conference. Ole Miss and Georgia Tech announced a two-year contract last April calling for the Rebels to play in Atlanta on Sept. 11, 2010, with the Yellow Jackets coming to Oxford on Sept. 10, 2011.
Boone also announced last July that Ole Miss had scheduled a two-game series with Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons will face the Rebels first on Sept. 23, 2006, in Oxford, with the return game to Winston-Salem, N.C., to be played Sept. 6, 2008.
The addition of Missouri completes the 2006 schedule, which will have the Rebels hosting seven games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.
Home games in 2006 will be against Memphis, Wake Forest, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Northwestern (La.) State, and Mississippi State, while road trips will be to Missouri, Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU.
