Ole Miss vs. Wyoming Postgame Quotes
9/24/2005 | Football
Sept. 24, 2005
Ole Miss Head Coach Ed Orgeron
Opening Comments
"It was a very poor performance by our football team. We got whipped on the line of scrimmage offensively and defensively. We had poor execution at times offensively with the penalties and the overall offensive line. I was really disappointed with the big plays that Wyoming made in the second half, especially in the screen game.
"We obviously have a lot of work to do. We came back in the second half and made some adjustments. That worked for the most part on defense. In the second half, we played on a short field a lot, and we still held them to only eight points. Defensively, we couldn't manufacture anything.
"Micheal coming in gave us as little spark, but nowhere what we needed. I am really disappointed with the overall execution of our team. I don't think it's a matter of whether we are ready to play or not. Our guys are ready. It's a matter of learning the offense and defense. We want them to do it and execute it and eliminate the penalties.
On next week's starter
"If Micheal is ready to go, we are going to start him. I think it was obvious tonight. Robert had his chance, and he may have his chance again, but right now, Micheal is the better quarterback."
On putting Micheal in the game earlier
"We didn't talk about it that much. We wanted to give him a chance. He deserved the chance. We wanted to see what he could do."
Was it all Robert or a combination of things?
"I think it's a combination of things. He was not getting any help up front. We couldn't get anything going, and then the interceptions really hurt us."
When do you think the team's confidence was shaken?
"By the end of the third quarter our confidence was down. In the fourth quarter, we couldn't get anything going. We kept on fighting, and we just couldn't make any plays. They put the ball on the one-yard line, and we couldn't stop the quarterback sneak. At that point I thought it was going to be a tough road to go."
On Wyoming freshman running back Wynel Seldon
"I noticed him on film. I thought he was going to be really good, and he played well. We were missing him, because we were not in the right places at the right time. Obviously, we had some young guys in there, but we just did not get it done. Overall, we made some mistakes on defense."
Ole Miss Player Quotes
Quarterback Robert Lane
On the game
"Offensively we weren't very good. That's all I've got to say. We kept the defense out on the field too long. We've just got to go back out there, work hard and get better."
On the offensive woes
"There wasn't anything in particular that they (Wyoming) did. As a whole we didn't play good. Penalties hurt us offensively. We'll have to eliminate those and just play better."
On Ole Miss' offensive approach in the second half
"We just tried to play our game. You've got to give credit to Wyoming. They forced some turnovers and they just beat us tonight."
Quarterback Micheal Spurlock
On the game
"We made too many mistakes. That's it."
On playing with the injury
"I'll feel it in the morning. Right now there's too much adrenaline going through it. As far as the pain, it'll probably be something I'll feel later tonight or in the morning. Basically, I've got a cast on my hand. It's not mobile like it would usually be. But that's not an excuse. We lost the game and that's the end of it."
On his touchdown pass to Mike Espy
"It was just somebody going and making a play. He (Espy) wasn't giving up. Sure, we were down, but he still wanted to go out there and make a play, and that's what he did."
Linebacker Kelvin Robinson
On the defense's performance
"We didn't work hard enough, we've got work a lot harder this week to be prepared for Tennessee. We need more effort out of everyone, including me."
On the physicality of Wyoming
"They were more physical than we were. We have to work on our physical game and play tougher."
Defensive Lineman McKinley Boykin
On the offensive line
"I was beating them all night, I just couldn't get to the quarterback. He is very elusive, he reminds me of Jay Cutler (Vanderbilt). I'll give it to him, he is a real good quarterback"
On preparing for Tennessee
"We've got to get on the grind, and practice harder than we have before. Everybody knows that Tennessee is the real deal. We have to get everything together, and make things right."
Wyoming Head Coach Joe Glenn
Opening Statement
"This one was really gratifying. We took some shots in the first quarter and staggered a bit. We were not doing anything well, but we were able to get up and fight. This win says a lot about our team."
On Fr. RB Wynel Seldon
"He was hitting all his holes. He ran well inside and outside. For a freshman to come in a run for over 100 yards against the Ole Miss defense says a lot about what type of player he is."
On the offense
"Once we got some kind of rhythm on offense, we were able to throw the ball and run it well. Offensive Coordinator Bill Cockhill did a great job of calling plays and really mixed it up."
Wyoming Players
#1 DB Derrick Martin
"This was a huge win for us, it feels great to get it done on the road. I feel like our defense really stepped up against their young quarterback, this win really felt great."
#9 WR Jovon Bouknight
"I felt we played well after we got settled down, we really started playing well in the 2nd quarter."
On his touchdown run
"The touchdown felt really good. I just followed my instincts and found the endzone."
#17 QB Corey Bramlet
"This win felt good. Our emotions were high. "It was pretty similar to last year. We were up at the half. I felt like once we got our running game going it seemed to get everyone else going. It felt good to win this game on the road."
